The owners wanted a home that took in views of the offshore islands and also for the garage to be a triple with a tall entry. The site was tricky, a relatively steep ridge, so making the house and garage fit without major terra-forming was interesting. The front of the house has a raking ceiling and all openings are positioned to focus on an aspect of the view or the surrounding bush. This home works well, is very sunny and the high awning windows allow the heat to naturally escape in summer, but there is more than enough thermal mass in the floor to retain heat in the winter. We kept the front deck close to the ground by seating it on poured in situ concrete beam foundations.
